Windows and Linux have equal importance in the world of Information Technology. Windows suit has to be bought from Microsoft, while Linux can be downloaded free of cost from the World Wide Web. But Linux administration demands advanced skill sets. The administrator should always keep abreast of the latest

technological developments.

Windows recently launched client OS Vista to satisfy the next generation users. It offers easy access with high security – a cut above the Windows XP client OS. Its different editions - Home, Premium, Business and

Ultimate – intend to satisfy the users as well as the administrators with the easy domain account generation.

Linux offers lot of client OSs. All of them are free. Besides offering the opportunity to customize, the client OS makes the administrators think a lot. Ubuntu and Fedora are the well known Client OSs. Both are free and can be downloaded from the web.

A lot of things have happened to the Windows Server OS after the release of Windows NT 4.0 Server, and its successors - Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003.We can expect advanced features in Windows Server 2008. SUS and RIS Servers are some of the advanced features. Of course, the 2003 Server integrates all server services like DNS, DHCP, NTFS QUOTA Management, Active Directory that play crucial roles in the Windows Server OS. The introduction of active directory by Microsoft is considered as landmark achievement.

It was a wonderful experience to work on Linux servers – especially Debian and Ubuntu.  It satisfies the server concepts, along with services like DNS, DHCP and more importantly IPtable (Linux Firewall) and the SQUID. We can protect our network from external attacks, such as Phishing and the Pharming. A regular IPtable maintenance will ensure the safety of our files.

As a messaging system, Exchange Server 2003, a successor of exchange 5.5, has integrated the exchange directory services with the active directory. The Public folder facility is added advantage for these messaging systems.Microsoft has released versions like Exchange Server 2003 Standard and the Exchange Server Enterprise Editions to satisfy our business requirements. The Recovery Folder helps administrator reduce the efforts in recovery.

Postfix is the Linux mail service I have used. It has a greater functionality when we configure it as a virtual mail server. While integrating with MySQL to store the users, it provides greater security. Moreover, it is easy to manage the user creation. ClamAV and the SpamAssassin are the free softwares to protect the antivirus and the spam mails.
